I hadn't had a chance to photograph any of the hawks since I got my new lens. Yesterday afternoon was a good opportunity. I took these photographs from the middle of the road at the closest point for a good view.
Here are two different shots. The first is uncropped.

It wasn't until I cropped the photos that I realized that she was using only one foot to grasp the branch. This can be seen quite clearly in the second photo (click on the photo for an enlargement).

Fantastic! We have wood pigeons in a eucalyptus tree not far from us. I have featured them on a previous blog, with their white butcher's aprons over very portly chests.
I suppose the one-legged grip means it's injured? Hope it's okay.

Great shots. She's gorgeous. We drive past a favorite red-tailed hawk perch on our way into town. They do possess an awesome presence. I've seen hawks perched, standing on one leg. I always just assumed it's a resting position for them. I may have to do a little checking around to see why they do it.

chiefbiscuit - I found your blog post - I love the "wop-wop-wop" sound effect of the wood pigeon. Re injury - hopefully not (see RD's comment). I noted it in the hope that someone would know if this is common; what a sense of balance!

RD - There is apparently another pair in the neighbourhood, although I haven't been able to spot the nest. I see them circling frequently these days. I'd be very interested to know if this hawks commonly rest just on one foot.
