Verdin (Auriparus flaviceps) - II

I thoroughly enjoy watching the Verdins who come into our backyard in the springtime. They arrive early in the year. I'd never heard of these sweet little birds until I came to Tucson. Sometimes they are quite yellow, sometimes more orange. I spent about twenty minutes one morning recently, trying to get some good shots of this little fellow as he flitted through a large mesquite tree.

I wrote about Verdins in a previous post. In that post, I photographed them with a 100 mm. prime lens (no image stabilization). These were photographed at 300 mm. with an image-stabilized zoom lens.

I love verdins. We first saw them in Sonora, Mexico then in south Texas. Beautiful little birds Wish they visited up here.

I love the subtle coloration - what pretty little birds!

Cool to see what an IS lens can do.

What an earnest-looking little bird - it has the expression of someone on the lookout for a bargain. Love the colours and the pointy beak; the sharp, attentive eyes.

hedwig - I learned today from reading the University of Arizona article that it's a "charm" of finches. Do you think it's a flock of verdins?

laura - I do like the IS lens. I know a prime lens would be sharper, but the zoom is working out for me pretty well and I get a couple of extra stops out of the IS. Hope you're enjoying your new camera!

chiefbiscuit - " ... on the lookout for a bargain." That cracks me up! He was certainly working hard getting food while he was modelling for me.
