But mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.
Noel Coward
We must have been nuts - but out M. and I went last week, hats, water bottles, energy bars and cameras in hand, to hike up part of the Esperero Trail in Sabino Canyon. It didn't seem like such a bad idea at 10 a.m. with a slight breeze blowing, but when we came back well after one in the unrelenting heat, I realized what an idiot I'd been. That's when I recalled Noel Coward's poem and thought "Englishwomen, too." Not that we didn't meet dozens of other people who didn't seem to be having any trouble at all.
Nevertheless, the desert did put on a bit of a show for us and all in all, despite some dehydration and slight shakiness toward the end, it was definitely worth it. Here are just a few of the desert sights we saw. (More to follow.)

I love seeing cactus blooms. There's something about a cactus flower that looks simultaneously delicate and hardy. Not soft like a rose petal, yet softened. Beautiful photos.
