I went outside to try out a Canon PowerShot S2 IS camera and took these photos at full 12X zoom. This pair of Gila Woodpeckers were in the mesquite tree by the old play-yard.
I was concentrating on the male in the center of the photo when the female took off. I swung around and managed to get her just at the edge of the frame. It's fuzzy, but I was moving pretty quickly.
The enlargement's even fuzzier of course, but I thought it was worth posting because it shows a different flight perspective from the one I posted yesterday.

I have a Canon PowerShot S2 IS (as well as a couple of other cameras.) I have just put on a 1.5x TC-DC58B Tele-converter - I am quite happy with the additional power --- it gives just a bit of boost to get some close but not quite close enough shots. Seems like the not quite close enough is the rule with trying to photograph birds.

endment - Thanks so much for your opinion about the Tele-converter, which I'm considering getting next. I'm sure I'll never get "close enough" but the extra power will certainly help. I love these woodpeckers, but they tease me by getting close at the most inconvenient times. A cactus wren just hopped on the windowsill and looked in at me. I have to be very still when he comes by, which is quite often, or he's off like a rocket. No modelling for him!
